onunload event - Macromedia Dreamweaver

Hi, I'm intrigued but haven't yet experimented. Is the body onunload event fired when the user tries to close the browser window? I do my banking online and my banks website somehow captures the fact that I have clicked the X to close my browser window and pops up an alert to ask me if I wish to leave the site. Is that fired from the onunload event? If not, how is it done? I dunno about "onunLoad" but it might be "onClose" in body tag
