Default opening bitmaped images in AI that are autoconverted to vector with transp. backgrounds

Seem weird? My friend, an illustrator without much knowledge of AI os doing this somehow. Anybody know how? When he opens his scanned line art that he saves as a tif, AI 6 (!) opens the file as a vector paths files, all outlined and ready to manipulate, and with NO WHITE BACKGROUND! It's as if the functions of Streamline had magically been translated to his version of 6.0. Any thoughts?

Default Re: opening bitmaped images in AI that are autoconverted to vector with transp. backgrounds

No, it will not automatically do this.

Either he is opening an image with a clipping path or he is mistaking the "no-white" in a bitmap file.

Ask your friend if he edit the image's path in Illustrator.
