opening dwg files in Illustrator 9

I have been experiencing numerous problems when trying to open dwg files in illustrator 9, sometimes a dwg file can be opened and the next day it gives an error message when trying to open the very same file. There are files that I cannot even hope to open, and I don't know why. I have saved the dwg's in all the available AutoCAD versions available, in different stroke weights, colors, etc... some files can be opened, some cant, I am working on WIN XP 1GB. I have searched the forums for anything pertaining to the subject, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have experienced very similar problems, but in Illustrator 10, Windows XP, 1 gb RAM. I had 2 drawings, one was a mirror of the original. The original opened, though it took some time. I made the modifications and then attempted to open the mirror drawing without success. A reboot solved the problem. I installed Cachman XP as a memory manager and I can get the same results by using it to free memory after opening the first drawing. I have since installed CADgate from Hotdoor.com and most of the size and open issues have disappeared. You may try saving the file as DXF rather than DWG as it it is considerably more generic.

Have you all found a way to open the .dwg files in AI. Because I to am having problems. Some times it says not the right file type or everything is centered and looks a mess

Try a demo of Autoset CAD Publisher. [url]www.jwgraphics.com[/url] It converts DXF files to AI files . It's a very good program.
