Opening Freehand 8 in Freehand MX - Macromedia Freehand

Has anyone noticed that this seems to be impossible? It's frustrating because, at my workplace we have many files archived in Freehand 8. I have to open them in Freehand 9 in the classic environment. The strange thing is that Freehand 8 files open in Illustrator CS, although it doesn't help me any, since I hate illustrator! Anybody know if there's a way to open them in MX?? thanks, Labelguy...

I can open Freehand 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10 files in MX. After reading your post I searched my HD for these old files and they opened with no problems.

I have no problem opening FH8 files in FHMX. I assume you're using FH
    11.0.1?

Try this. Select one FH8 file in the Finder, Get Info, select Open with/FHMX
11.0.2. (If FHMX doesn't show, use "enable all applications" to find and
select FHMX.) Then choose 'Use this application'/ change all.

It's working here. If I double-click on one of these files in the finder it
    opens in FHMX/OS 10.3.8.

Thanks Judy, you have solved my problem! There is only one more strange thing.
If I drag a Freehand 8 file onto the Freehand MX icon in the tool bar, it will
still not open it. It only works if I double click it. Not a major problem, but
    strange none the less!

    thanks again,

I'm glad that helped. Dragging a FH8 onto the FHMX dock icon doesn't work
    here either.

My previous post implied that there was a difference between FH 11.0.1 and
11.0.2. Sorry, that was a typo.

We get kind of the same behavior with Freehand 9 files we get from wire
services. In our case I think there is creator/filetype information
getting lost in the translations. But the files open up fine if I add
the ".fh9" extension to them. I've even set up a renaming droplet which
adds the extension automatically because I got tired of doing that.

Have you tried holding down the Apple and Option keys when you drag the
Freehand 8 file over the Freehand MX icon in the dock? That's supposed
to force it to accept and open up all the file types it possibly can.

Thanks for that Wes. Yes that works.

I usually find the file using a Finder search and simply double-click on it
    from the search results window.
