openssh and "You don't exist, go away!" problem - SCO

I've grabbed JPR's ssh package from ftp.jpr.com and installed openshh on a 5.0.5 box. I've followed his instructions in the README and sshd won't run until I make a system key and this won't work: # ./makenewsshkeys You don't exist, go away! You don't exist, go away! You don't exist, go away! Any ideas? -eric wood...

    I've seen this error before, and forgot to make any notes regarding its
    cause. It might have to do with permissions; I'll scratch my brain and
    post back later.

    What are the permissions on /etc/passwd?

    # ls -l /etc/passwd
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 Sep 15 10:06 /etc/passwd ->
    /var/opt/K/SCO/Unix/5.0.5Eb/etc/passwd
    # ls -lL /etc/passwd
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 bin auth 1033 Oct 10 16:27 /etc/passwd

    I wonder if ssh-keygen doesn't like the symbolic link being 777.

    After some private exchanges with Eric Wood, I found that his problem
    with the "You don't exist. Go away!" message came down to this: His
    machine had oss646b installed.

    I had compiled the ssh binaries on a machine which did *not* have
    oss646b installed.

    The oss646b.ltr for this Execution Environment Supplement has this
    paragraph:

    8. The following libc calls will not function correctly
    without kernel modifications:

    - setproctitle()
    - getproctitle()

    The ssh code has lots of calls to setproctitle(); I have (so far) not
    found out just what those kernel modifcations might be.

    Thanks JPR for your expertise. Uninstalling oss646b and reinstalling
    CSSA_2002_SCO_39 solved the problem.
