Default OpenType font compatability in different generations of InDesign?

Well, this one's got me stumped.

We have a document that was probably originally created in InDesign 1.5, which we subsequently edited in InDesign 2. The original document used pretty much the full set of MonoType Centaur, i.e., glyphs from all the fonts. When we moved the document to InDesign 2, we changed all the fonts from Centaur MT to Adobe Centaur Std. However, we had some problems with the swash characters, so we swapped about six Centaur swash glyphs out to Sanvito Pro.

Now when we open the same doc in InDesign 3, none of the Sanvito Pro glyphs display (though they do fine when we open the old doc on the same machine in ID2), and many of the Centaur Italic Std glyphs fail to display.

I'm not completely sure if this is an ID question or a type question, but is there a reason for this? Obviously, if the ID2 document displays and prints these glyphs, they're properly installed. The machine is an Athlon 3200+ with 1.5GB RAM running Win XP Home.

Do you get a missing font error message? I've seen it with some
converted docs that I actually have to tell ID the font is there, but
once saved in CS it's not a problem anymore.

No, all we get are boxes with an "X" through them. No messages. When you place thre cursor over the glyph, the character palette tells you the font name correctly, there's no pink, and there's no style applied to the glyph.

One more thing. Make sure that the proper opentype options are selected.

Generally, if we re-type all the incorrect glyphs using the font, everything is OK, but it sure doesn't seem like this should be necessary when the glyphs involved are Adobe OpenType and the application is an Adobe app.

I agree, nevertheless the problem is existent.

Using Sanvito instead of Centaur swash, with Centaur, would be a real no-no typographically.

If it's only a handful of characters, retyping them and applying the swash formatting to Centaur Std Italic should work fine.

I suspect the problem has to do with how InDesign assigns Unicode values to the original Type 1 font's characters. It has nothing to do with OpenType per se.
