Operation cannot complete error - Adobe Illustrator Windows

When trying to place an .ai file in an open .ai doc in aics, I'm getting an error message of: The Operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." The link in the FAQ for this topic gives me a "file not found" on Adobe's site. I can open the .ai file as a separate doent and copy and paste but something's wrong if I'm getting this error isn't it? For those of you who've read this post and wondered what was going on,
    here's what I figured out:

The error message only occurs when trying to place older .ai clipart. You
first have to open the art and resave it as a "converted" file (.ai renames
it automatically; just do a File/Save As) then it can be placed.

I'm guessing this is just a work-around though--surely this cannot be the
    workflow Adobe intended?

    Hey, Rick!

Were you Linking the file or Embedding it?

I do not know if this is related but we were having a similar issue with .eps files created in Illustrator linked in a Indesign doent. We discovered that we had to open the .eps files in Illustrator and resave them as ASCII format not binary.
