    Default Operation cannot complete error

When trying to place an .ai file in an open .ai doc in aics, I'm getting an error message of: The Operation cannot complete because of an unknown error."

The link in the FAQ for this topic gives me a "file not found" on Adobe's site.

I can open the .ai file as a separate document and copy and paste but something's wrong if I'm getting this error isn't it?

I've already tried trashing the prefs and rebooting; searching the support site; and trying and getting the same error in a new document (to eliminate the possibility of a corrupt file); but still get the error. Am I doing something wrong?

For those of you who've read this post and wondered what was going on,
    here's what I figured out:

The error message only occurs when trying to place older .ai clipart. You
first have to open the art and resave it as a "converted" file (.ai renames
it automatically; just do a File/Save As) then it can be placed.

I'm guessing this is just a work-around though--surely this cannot be the
    workflow Adobe intended?

Were you Linking the file or Embedding it?

I do not know if this is related but we were having a similar issue with .eps files created in Illustrator linked in a Indesign document. We discovered that we had to open the .eps files in Illustrator and resave them as ASCII format not binary.
