Default Opinions on Aquaminds Notetaker

Greetings,

I'm interested in getting some note taking/outliner software. Does anyone
have experience with NoteTaker by Aquaminds?

Thanks,

You might like to read my review of it in TidBITS. (And I've written
reviews there of lots of other software of this kind.) m.

I had never heard of these kinds of apps before reading your review of
NoteTaker: never heard of them, but always felt the need for one. I
tried the demo version of NoteTaker, and after a few days I was hooked.
It takes the place of my "Miscellany" folder--where I used to put
useful morsels of information--but, unlike the "miscellany" folder,
NoteTaker is not a black hole where things get lost or forgotten.

Hi,
I use it to keep notes on projects. For the record I'm running
it on a 366 MHz Lime iBook with 320 MB memory. When running it puts a
significant load on the system, The file auto-updates and auto indexs
so at times if falls behind my typing (i.e. enter a new unique word).
At the time I'm running this I also usually have a terminal window
open, am running Mail, Safari, Project builder and debugging some code
so it's a busy little box.

I'm not a power user by any means and I usually use it to keep
outline style notes on a number of projects. I like the outline
handling and indexing and the way I can have a table of contents, add
new pages go to them from there.

It also has an item on the edit to insert Date/Time so you can
easily date sections. When you are entering text an outline item can
be multiple lines (just hit return) then to create a new item
CMD/RETURN. You can then indent/outdent that item for new topics.

I don't usually use free form type input so no real feed back there.
Also I have cut and pasted pictures and text from other things which
is useful. I don't often put in web links. And I have tried the
publish to the web. This was mainly an experiment and not the way I
normally use the program.

In sum, if you don't need indexing or table of contents Appleworks
can outline about as well. If you want to publish to the web notes
and outlines look into Fitnesse (www.fitnesse.org). Which is a wiki
(google it..) and once you grok it is a pretty cool method. It isn't
WYSIWYG, you enter formatting codes and stuff and it formats things.
But if you want stuff organized and indexed NoteTaker is a pretty nice
tool.

Actually, one of the nice things about NoteTaker is that it encourages
categorization, and permits you to use as much (or as little) structure
to your notes as you wish. You don't have to get too fine with your
categories, and broad categories ("notebook sections") give you the
equivalent of searchable "shoeboxes". It's nice, however, to be able
to impose more structure on some of the "boxes" when it's appropriate,
and NoteTaker can this, too. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for
bringing NoteTaker to my attention.
