I have an S230...which is an older version of the S400.
The S230 is great!! No complaints from me.

The S400 has many improvements such as 3x optical zoom...4mp...smaller
casing...etc... should be a great camera! I know many have said good things
    about it!

They're good, along the lines of a top end compact camera, but they're not what I'd call good value compared to the G3/G5... To me, they're limited...

It will be good for your wife in Automatic mode, good for you in Manual.
She can keep it in her purse; you can keep it in your pocket. I keep
mine in my pocket whenever I'm out - every day. I do miss the swivel
lens of my former Nikon, which also did a better job with macros.
    I recommend it.

I started with the S100, moved to the S300 and now have the S400. I've been
very pleased with the size, you can carry it all the time and anywhere. The
pics are great and I like the rechargeable batteries and the fact that it is
    CF vs SMedia.

    Go for it!

Got all of mine via eBay, from a vendor called photocenter1. I'd recommend
    them!
