Default Optimize PDFs w/ Duotone EPS images...

    Hello,
Whenever I create a PDF (through Quark for this project, unfortunately) by either exporting as PDF or via Distiller, the resulting PDF is quite large. I've pinned this down to the EPS dutones in the job not being compressed. I assume because they're EPS files they're assumed to be vector based?
Is there a way I can optimze these PDFs to compress the duotone EPS files? Nothing I seem to do seems to work...
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Please include your versions for QuarkXPress, Acrobat, etc., and your workflow for creating the PDF files for us to help you.

    Sorry.

    QuarkXPress 6.5
    Acrobat/Distiller 8

    PDF workflow is the following...

    - PDF via "Export -> Layout as PDF" from QuarkXPress 6.5 & then Optimized in Acrobat 8
    OR
    - Print to .PS from QuarkXPress 6.5 and then distilled via Distiller 8

I've also had the same problems when exporting duotones from InDesign CS/CS2/CS3 via export via "Adobe PDF Presets" option.

To me, it seems like no matter what method I try, it thinks these EPS files (duotone bitmap images) are ignored as they're thought to be vector based EPS files. To test this, I've converted the EPS files to TIFs (thus, no longer duotones) and created my PDFs and the resulting PDFs are a fraction of the size.

    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Have you tried the new workflow with InDesign and pacing .psd files into
    InDesign - this will help.

Converting .psd into EPS and back out again does create issues with
file-size since Acrobat cannot break the colour space into a smaller
packages (like indexed colour or even DeviceN).

I would look to changing your workflow - trial downloads of InDesign for
    the Mac at adobe.com

Yea, we have about 15 or so copies of CS3 (design standard and premium).
Unfortunately, one of our clients requires us to use Quark still on their work.
