very pricey. Some 3rd party vendors offer the same kinds of classes for
less money. For a moderate amount of money, go to your local bookstore
and get Tom Kyte's One-on-One book (even has some stuff for the sql
server guru). There are also many other Oracle books available (there's
a series of Oracle 101 books that are introductory in nature). If you
don't have a local bookstore, you can check Amazon.com. For free, you
can read all the Oracle-written documentation at http://tahiti.oracle.com.

In addition to the excellent recommendations made already, you might care to
consider Oracle: The Complete Reference (Loney, et al).
A sensible approach, IMHO, might be to temporarily 'unlearn' your SQL Server
knowledge when dealing with Oracle, and to temporarily 'unlearn' your Oracle
knowledge when dealing with SQL Server.
Imagine yourself to be a new starter in either case.
Architecture and appropriate techniques diverge so much between the two.

Oracle newbie
Hello
I install Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.4 for Windows NT and
I choose Typical in Starter Database. As I understand ORACLE create a
sample database for me (If that is wrong please inform me). Also the
installation create some services.Probably my starter database is
OracleServiceORCL and OracleStartORCL which they running. Also running
OracleTNSListener80 and OracleWebAssistant.
Then i try to connect with Oracle Enterprise Manager with username
internal and password oracle (i found this information in the
Internet). In the left upper pane none of the choices show me nothing.
How can i show my database in Oracle Enterprise Manager?
Can this done via SQL (I am interested more in connection howto no in
common SQL queries - but a full example it is OK for me)

Re: Oracle newbie
newbie,
On NT, check your services. Any oracle database will be listed in the
format OracleServiceTest (for a database named test)
If you have any there, you can try login in with the following
usernames & passwords
SCOTT TIGER
SYSTEM MANAGER
SYS CHANGE_ON_INSTALL
If you do not have a database, you can use the Database Assistant to
create one for you. If you are able to login to an existing database
with the above passwords, changed them to something else if the
database contains any real/sensitive data. There might be some other
usernames that will need passwords changed as well)
To see your database in Enterprise Manager, after logging in
(Standalone mode) then choose from the top navigation buttons
NAVIGATION--Add database to tree, then you can try to add it manually
by providing the info, or have it found in the tnsnames.ora file.

Oracle ... but 8.0.4 is so obsolete it will likely be impossible to find
books for it and support, even here in this group, will be difficult.
I would suggest that you go to http://store.oracle.com and purchase the
CD pack for 8.1.7.4 or, if hardware permits, 9.2.0.
If will be a far happier experience.
