OS 9 on Mac5200 - Mac Applications & Software

I want to resurrect for a family member my old Power PC, 5200. The Apple site says that OS8 is the highest OS for this CPU. Is this info still valid or could it handle OS9? -M.P....

8.6 should be best (and fastest) imo.

Hi Michael, either way i stand by the above.
I've a 6500 and 9600/350 here and both macs are slower with os9 compared
to os8.6. Plus theres more ram available too..

Try it if you've some spare time.. good luck :-)

A much nicer computer than the 5200. I would still take it up to
9.1, although as noted by someone else, you might find that 8.6 is
    faster.

And you can't run any software that requires 9.x.

that may not apply to him! I'm sure that's one of the many decisions
he'll be making when comparing the pros/cons of each os...

Absolutely, and I wanted to make sure he was aware of it.

    I've had os9.1's on several 8100's
but they are uhh slow. I'd say again: it will work but slow.

Keep in mind that there are 2 types of os 9 software:
    - those for elder machines and
    - those for the G4-533 series up.
i have them both (Appleshare ip6.3.3 comes with an old os9.1 installer
    kit)

You need the old stuff and will not be able to use an installer from a
    new mac.

    Good Luck
