OS X 10.2.8 update failure - Mac Applications & Software

I was just installing the 10.2.8 combo update (the new one) and the following thing happenned: I clicked on the DMG file to start mounting it, the normal disk copy progress meter appeared and just as it got to the end, progress bar along with the entire window disappeared and the DMG file was not mounted. Does anyone know what's going on here?...

This is a widely reported error; I had it myself. The fix is to first
use the 10.2.6 combo update, then use the smaller 10.2.8 update (not
    the combo).

Well, it may be giving some people trouble but it is certainly not
widespread. This is a 97MB combo update. Is it possible you don't have
enough ram left for the .DMG to mount because it is essentially a
ramdisk? Is it possible you have a corrupted download? You may want to
restart your machine before trying to mount it or you might try
re-downloading the image. You might also try using Disk Utility to
repair permissions before trying to mount the .DMG image. Just some
things to try that don't hurt too much.

For what it's worth the 10.2.8 combo update mounted and installed
successfully on both my G4/400 AGP and TI/667 Powerbook. Your results
    may vary.

How widespread the problem of the combo updater not working is open for
debate. There is discussion of it at macintouch.com and on the Apple
    Discussion boards.

I have downloaded it three times. Twice with iCab and once with
Interarchy. All three downloads will not mount. The reason cited by
other sources and the problem I have is that the checksum does not
verify. I don't think extra memory or repairing permissions is going to
    solve that.

Corrupted download? A possibility. Might it not also be a possibility
that certain servers at Apple contain a corrupted copy or causing the
corruption? This is the first time I have had any problems with Apple
    downloads regardless of size.

Disk images are nothing like "essentially a RAM disk." They're file
systems that live within a file. I routinely mount multi-GB disk images
on this machine with only 384M physical.
