OSX disables iBook eject key? - Mac Applications & Software

I just discovered that I can't eject my iBook's CD tray with the eject key (F12). I tried holding it down for 5 or 10 seconds. I tried it with all modifier keys but nothing worked. The key works fine in OS9. I'm also able to eject in OSX using the eject key on Apple's external keyboard. (I didn't try F12, but used the special eject key on the numeric keypad.) If there's a CD in the tray, I can eject it by dragging it to the trash or using the eject command. Toast and iTunes will also eject. I ...

Default OSX disables iBook eject key?

I just discovered that I can't eject my iBook's CD tray with the
eject key (F12). I tried holding it down for 5 or 10 seconds. I tried
it with all modifier keys but nothing worked.
The key works fine in OS9. I'm also able to eject in OSX using the
eject key on Apple's external keyboard. (I didn't try F12, but used the
special eject key on the numeric keypad.)
If there's a CD in the tray, I can eject it by dragging it to the
trash or using the eject command. Toast and iTunes will also eject.
I did discover the menu item in the Menu Extras folder and
installed it, so I can use that -- but is it really true that the
iBook's eject key is non-functional under OSX?
I'm using OS 10.2.1. I'm planning to upgrade to the 10.2.6, but
haven't had time to do it yet. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Pressing F12 for several seconds doesn't work, but F12 does eject
the CD if I also press the function key. Thanks.

I'm less than a week into using OSX so I haven't tried everything
yet. Using the F keys with the fn key was one of those things. I did try
all the other modifer keys, though, so I don't know why I didn't try the
fn key. Anyway, it does work with F12.

I know that this does not help you, but it works just fine for me on my 600
iBook. I am running 10.2.6, don't remember that it ever stopped working
during the 10.2.x upgrade process. Pressing f12 works in about 2-3 seconds,
works immediately by pressing fn-f12 together.

pressing fn-f12 does not open the CD tray at all on my iBook 700, nor
should it. pressing fn makes the key only F12; not pressing fn makes it
act as an eject button. That's why the letters F12 are gray.
