OSX FW MX 2004 Spinning Wheel Hang on Resize of Slice in Properties
Platform: Mac G4, 733MHZ, OSX 10.2.8, 1.25 GB memory
Scenario: FW MX 2004, 472 x 500px document, 17 slices, 4 Library symbols, 12 slices with behaviors (simple images swaps)
Action: Click on one slice, properties say 105W x 284H, I enter 15 for width in properties
Result: Spinning wheel for at least 3 minutes.
Requires a Force Quit of Fireworks to continue.
Help! I've lost 6-12 hours on this. This is a production job for a 200+ page website where FW MX is the crucial tool (I hope). I don't want to switch to ImageReady, but...
Things done:
1. Restart computer.
2. Run with only Suitcase X1 and only two-non system fonts
3. Scan/repair all fonts with FontDoctor and Suitcase X1
4. Trash FW MX 2004 preferences and cache files
5. Ran Drive 10 on all drives except boot drive
Things to do:
1. Run Norton disk doctor and speed disk on all drives, especially boot disk (when I get my Norton CD)
2. Re-build document from scratch (ouch)
3. Download trial on my Windows XP machine and try the same scenario/action.
Thanks for any help!

No, I wasn't sure if all support is now only fee-based or not and there are several similar, seeminlgly OSX FW MX 2004 related, topics here. I like to make it public first to help people get an idea of the kinds of issues surrounding a new release.
I will look into direct support though. I just purchased the full Studio MX upgrade so maybe there's at least some free tech support.

You are not alone. Apparently there are many things that are slow in FWMX04 on OSX. MM is supposedly addressing the issue(s). You can go here to get the latest info:

Re: OSX FW MX 2004 Spinning Wheel Hang on Resize of Slice in Properties
Yeah, I researched all the tech notes I could find and read a lot of the forums. It's not SLOW performance though, it's a HANG, at least I would say 75 minutes is a hang.
Incidently I can recreate the bug by doing the following 4 steps on a new file.
1. Create a new document of 500 x 500 (other sizes also "work")
2. Create a slice with the slice tool in the middle, say around 200x300 pixels
3. Select the slice with the select tool
4. Change the width in properties to 15 OR drag on one end of the slice to a thin horizontal size (around 15px) and select the slice
Not a very esoteric sequence of events.
That's it! "Application not responding" requiring a "force quit"

Re: OSX FW MX 2004 Spinning Wheel Hang on Resize of Slice in Properties
Dave,
I can make FW hang by repeatedly duplicating a single pixel rectangle until I have a large grid of them and then dragging the whole grid. On the first drag it slows and then it hangs. Very frustrating. I don't think there's anything you can do about until MM releases an update. I am avoiding FW MX04 until then.
BTW your work is very nice. I am teaching a web portfolio class for illustrators at CCA(C) in the spring--maybe I'll see you around there sometime.

If some of the speed problems that people have reported on the MAC were
attributed to PC's, I'd say that, because of all the number crunching
the machine would have to do when a slice was resized as in the original
poster's report, there was a problem with the way it works with the math
co-processor. Do Mac's have math co-processors?

Re: OSX FW MX 2004 Spinning Wheel Hang on Resize of Slice in Properties
Murray-
I sent a file along with my machine specs (apple profiler doc) to Andy Finnell at his request.
I really like FW but I am forced to use the older MX and ImageReady right now. I had been thinking about getting a new G5 (and thought that this speed problem with certain apps might be my justification for finally laying out the cash), but someone posted a similar comment about G5 slowness.
I sure hope MM actually does something about this issue. If their atitude toward mac issues in the past is any indication though, I am not holding my breath.

Re: OSX FW MX 2004 Spinning Wheel Hang on Resize of Slice in Properties
Linda,
Thanks for the testing, I like your Flash re-creation, did you actually record off the screen?
Yes, as indiciated originally, it's on OS-X on a Mac G4. I cannot recreate it on Windows XP. It's NOT a performance problem, it's a crash(hang) and therefore it's not a "wish-list" item. I reported it to Macromedia through tech support, so we'll see where that goes.
I also get occasional crashes (quits) when selecting slices or moving items (I think slices) around. These are far less frequent, but not really acceptable either. This may be related to Steven's problem?
As far as Fireworks performance goes, I was very sad to see that my $400 eMachines Windows XP-Personal (1.8GHZ Celeron) machine completely out-did my G4-1GHZ. I'll have to fill out that Fireworks performance survey I guess.
Thanks everyone for reading and responding to this so quickly. You're an asset to the community and Macromedia should be VERY thankful.

but yes, it was recorded off the screen. I used Camtasia Recorder from
TechSmith. TechSmith is the same company that develops Snagit screen
capture software.
The Camtasia studio does a nice job of video processing, and at a very
affordable price. The Producer, another part of the Camtasia studio
suite, can output edited files in all the popular formats.
