OT: anyone know a good primer on TV advertising

I have a client that wants me to buy time on local TV for an ad they have in the can. I would like a book on media. Went to Amazon and there are dozens of books but this is not field so I don't know which book to choose. I also went to elance to see if I could find a media planner. Are there other sites I can go to to find an independent media planner. Has to be a million "consultants" in NYC area. Thanks in advance.

How local is this area? The smaller the area, the more help you can get from the local TV stations or local cable outlet.

Honestly, they can help you figure out the best way to reach the audience at the right budget.

Your budget will be the most important thing.

But the station itself will have much more information than you could ever get.

They will be able to target demographics by age, sex, location, for every time period of their day.

It takes years and years of experience to become a media buyer. But for a local TV ad, I wouldn't sweat the details.

Sorry. Realized I didn't give enough info. Local cable channel in Westchester County. Basically, I'm trying to figure if it's like buying print where the agency gets 15% discount, what times to place ad (which would be a function of budget), etc.

Talk to the cable outlet.

From what I remember of my days at Ogilvy and Grey, yes, you most certainly to get the 15% commission.

And as much as I like Westchester, it's not New York City!

As well as the school system, recreation outlets, shopping, and much more.

It's just that they roll up the sidewalks after 11 PM. ;-)
