Default OT Recommended media DVD-R brand-model

    Actually Semi-OT.

I'm making back ups of projects to DVD-R. For CDs I have always used two different high rated media brands. I burn it once on one, then again on the other with a verify on each disk of the pair.

I found links here to sources of CD media reviews, but a search under DVD came up blank.

Does anyone have recommendations as to what brand of DVD-R media 2X to use OR what ones to stay AWAY from? Right now, there are three available locally. (I'm male so the spelling will probably be off but close enough - I hope) These are a bargan spindled, Iomation, and Maxell. I think I saw some by Fuji on a shelf once.

    Thank you,
    Bill

I'm not sure that there is 2x dvd-r media. There is 1x and 4x. 4x will burn at 4x, 2x, and 1x if your recorder supports 4x burning. Maybe the dvd/rw media is 2x or 2.4x on +r. Best buy usually has som good deals on fuji media, but you have to see what your burner reccomends. I have had good luck with ritek unbranded media, and I like the ritek media with the inkjet printable top because that printable layer is a good protective surface even if you can't print directly on the dvd (I can't).

You might want to check out meritline.com for media online or pcclub.com. Pc club has some very cheap and reliable unbranded media, but you may want to put a protective lable on them. Meritline has som sampler packs of various speeds and types of media and has packages for different burners. If you have a dvd -/+ r/rw burner stay away from any 1x +r media since (as far as I know) +r only supports 2.4x and 4x speeds.

The only media I have had any problem with is some I bought at staples (optimum).

I recommend ritek, (all types); but you may need to experiment with different brands.

I'll stay away from Optimum. While I use labels on CDs, I've stuck to "label by Sharpie" on the DVDs. I also let the ink dry for an hour or so before closing the case. They stay in their plastic cases and the insert serves as another place to put an ID and also to help keep light off them. That may not be needed, but...

The burner DVD-R r/rw CD-r/rw does 2X (a CenDyne repackaged Phillips) with DVD-R v.2 disks. The firmware is up to date.

I thought cendyne repackaged the pioneer(?). I usually use 4x media since I have the dual -r/+r burner ans it saves a lot of time. "label by Sharpie"...all the time too.

    Michael,

They did. Perhaps I should have written it as "(a Phillips repackaged under the CenDyne Label)".

Sorry, Pioneer not Philips. I though that cyndyne was using the pioneer burner and repackaging.
