Default OT: SPAM

Sorry to bother you with this, but I have been seeing a humongous
increase in SPAM lately and I am wondering if this has anything to do
with posting on this forum, or maybe because my E-mail is on my
Freestyler website.
How much spam do you get in one day? I saw mine go up from 2 a day to
about 20 the last couple of days.

I am really curious about this. So if you're not using a spamfilter yet
(I will soon though!) please share that here. Thanks!

Coen,

I get any where from 10 to 20 spam messages per day, per email address.
McAfee SpamKiller catches every bit of it. I have it set to accept messages
from friends only, which is a very nice feature.

I would certainly remove your email address from your website. Why not
replace it with a form that hides the address. There are also several
JavaScript solutions that will hide your address.

Here's a quick link that may help.

But once your address is out there I fear it can only get worse :(

So if I would send you mail it would not be received and read by you - am I correct?

Thanks alot for the URL. Just a question here: if my E-mail has already
been on older sites but those sites do no longer exist, will I still
receive just as much considering the same spammers send me mail? I mean,
is my E-mail address included in some kind of Spam database? Do the
addresses get sold to some kind of thirdparty?

That is correct to an extent. SpamKiller would quarantine your message at
the server level and notify me of it's existence. I would then have the
option of viewing it before downloading it into my email client. At that
point, if I choose to add you to my "Friends" list, then it would show up
just as regular email in the future.

Coen,

I'm no expert on this, but I imagine once your email address is out there,
it's obtainable by pretty much anybody for better or for worse.

I'm still not sure what to do regarding this for my own problem, but I think
you have to regard your email address as being expendable.

I get 10 -25 per day in my sbc/pacbell account and maybe 1 a day in my own
domain. I use SAproxy to filter and send to a spam folder, where I can check to
make sure that nothing real got trashed. So far only 2 spam emails have made it
to my inbox after 2 weeks of use.

About 100 spams, plus 100 to 1200 virus messages, according to what
viruses are currently in fashion. It's the price of having a website
that gets 1000 daily visitors.

While most of the pictures on his site are nude :oO , they are also
hummingbirds. ;o)

Check it out at www.hummingbird.net

I expect it is a frequent stop for hummingbird fans and photographers. It
currently ranks number 7 on a Google Search for the keyword "hummingbird.",
hence the traffic.

I think I might have actually run into the site long before frequenting the
Fireworks forum.

I just removed some 20 messages per mailbox (mostly Viagra, add inches and
stuff) that arrived since previous check 8 hours before. Plus, I'm still
getting sufficient number of those "Latest MS security update" worms. That's
the price for being popular I beleive :-)

What I do is download only message headers, read them, then delete anything
that looks like spam and virii, without even trying to download the whole
message body.

Actually, Coen, the traffic varies between 500 and 3000 unique visitors
per day, depending on the time of year. Interest drops sharply in the
winter, when most of the birds have migrated south. The site seems to
have developed a life of its own since 1995. The key to getting lots of
hits is to offer accessible, reliable information about a popular
subject. Or have lots of photos of naked women.

SURPISE FW CONTENT: In spring, many people check the site daily to
follow the northward migration, which I plot on maps using FW. Some
folks' fascination with these maps approaches addiction. Addiction =
lots of hits.

Tip for those of you that don't already know.

If you hold down the shift button + delete. It removes the offending mail
completely instead of just moving it to your deleted folder.

Lanny: it's good to see that you are actively translation "slang" into English for me. I presume "addiction" is a word that can be 'wrapped' to contain another meaning.
It happens sometimes I don't understand you guys becuase of these words.

Anyway, if all goes right, my next trip to the US will be in Spring 2004 and my buddy Bill will teach me AAAAAALLLL of that funny words! :-)

You know what's funny.. when I re-read my messages I seem to make
mistakes that I would never find possible to make. "translation" should
be "translatING" and "that funny words" should be "THOSE funny words"...
I would never (in conversations in person) would pronounce these words
like that, but this happens sometimes when my brain is going too quick I
guess. That's also why i'm "so quick on the uptake" sometimes. :-)

Just wanted to share that here.

Well Ilya,

If I should react to all those spam messages because I really could use
what they offer, I would:

"Make out all day long with an 11 Inch "Johnson", because I won this

with me just because he has heard "from reliable sources" that I am "a
trustworthy person that would not betray his fellowmen", and would be
marrying his daughter in the process and having 5 children which will
become geniusses because I fed them "Braincell increasing pills", and
even though my Nigerian wife would gain alot of weight after our
marriage I would not be worried about this as I would secretly put
"Reduce Fat Fast" in her meals, and in the meantime my mailbox got
fuller and fuller and I got happier and happier with my life because all
these great people want to make my life worthwile...."
