Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
File submitted to me has a type box. Inside of the box are 2 lines of text. The text is not editable with the text tool. When selected with the white arrow the type is outlined (only one line can be selected at a time.
How do I undo this mess and just have outlines for crying outloud?
Did this guy paste outlines into a text box?

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
He didnt paste in, that is how the 'create outlines ' command works.....you can undo it by double clicking on the text, I can here anyway.
He might have modified points within or applied an effect that doesnt work on text(?)

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
Phil, how exactly are you getting the type back from outlines? Other than "undo" immediately, I don't think type converted to outlines can go back.

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
Tom Usrey is correct. Once text is outlined it's outlined permanently (unless 'undo' is done prior to the document being closed). You're stuck with outlined text.

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
Phil may be creating the text into outlines with the original text left behind the outlined version.

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
I did a test....typed, converted to outlines, then double clicked on it with text tool and edited....I wasnt sure either, but it happened!
I just did it again, as it seems so weird, and it does work. It is hard to reselect it as the whole word is treated as one character, you can select it with the text tool. I admit I have not RTFM on this but I think I might have to now.
I have seen text behind as Chris said, but that is not happening here, as far as I can see.
I can't agree with Tom and John, as I just outlined-saved-closed-reopened-edited!
I am surprised, but hey, I've been surprised before!

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
If you select the text by highlighting it with the text tool before converting to outlines, the outlined text will stay inside a textbox. If you select the textframe with the arrow and convert, it will be more like "normal".
I see no way to get it back to text. With the outlines in a textframe scenario you can highlight each row with the texttool, but that doesnt mean it is editable type. Just that you can replace the highlighted outlines with what you type.

Re: Outlined text INSIDE of another TEXT box?
There are two ways to select text to be converted to outlines.
If you select the text within the frame, and then run the command, the text is converted. But the typeface remains active within the frame.
It is therefore possible to select the outlined characters, delete them, and retype.
It's not really undoing the conversion, but it is a handy technique. (Covered in one of my columns for InDesign Magazine.)
