    Fireworks has no overlay mode, though if you could describe what it
    does, we might be able to tell you how to create the same effect.

    now I want to design a rectangle to make it A navigation bar and I want to
    use the line tool to separate the buttons and I posted this thread in
    Photoshop forums and here is the reply that I got
    =============

    the bar can be split with slices. The dividers could be down with a bevel
    or embossed line, applied on a layer with an overlay style.

    Without seeing an example of what you want it to look like I can only
    give you a rather generic suggestion for making buttons. Use the Inner
    Bevel effect set to 2 or 3 pixels. To make the rectangle appear
    separated into buttons, use one dark line and one light line side by
    side. You do need to slice them. Before you slice them, decide whether
    to slice them next to the light line or the dark one.

    Alternatively, draw separate rectangles for each button and add the
    inner bevel effect to each one.

    Linda Rathgeber
