Overprint Not Converted to PDF Correctly
I inadvertently checked the "Overprint Fill" setting in Illustrator CS2 for a placed bitmap object which was set to a white fill. I saved the Illustrator file as an EPS and placed it in a Quark 6.5 document. When I printed to .ps from Quark and created a PDF using Acrobat Distiller 7.0, the object appeared as intended, ie a white object which had been placed on a dark background in Quark. The file also printed as intended to a Postscript printer. However, when I received the proof from the printer, the object was missing because it had been set to overprint. Can Distiller accurately render overprints? "Preserve Overprint Settings" was checked in the Distiller joboptions.
FYI the printer outputs to PDF prior to making the plates; the PDF he output showed the white object on the dark background too, although it didn't appear on the plate.
Thanks...

In Acrobat - go ADVANCED and turn ON the OVERPRINT PREVIEW ...
Can you now see the object?

Re: Overprint Not Converted to PDF Correctly
White overprinting is a very difficult situation, because some methods
of making separations will lose the object and others will keep it.
Overprint preview just picks one method and imitates that.
It is as well to pre-flight for this situation: visual checking is not
enough.

Hi Scott
When you check just the Black plate in Acrobats Output Preview, is it knocked out where the white object supposed to be?

Re: Overprint Not Converted to PDF Correctly
Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't know the "Overprint Preview" option existed in Acrobat, but when I checked it, yes the object previewed correctly. I think I'll leave that feature on.
Aandi, you're right, it would be wise to pre-flight the final files, since this is something that could easily be overlooked (speaking from experience.)

Scott
When doing printouts from Acrobat, make sure that "Overprint Preview" is also activated there.
Rg. Preflight - you have the propper right at your fingertips. Acrobat 7 Professional comes with a very good Preflight Tool. if you need assistance in creating you own preflight profiles just drop me a not at p.kleinheider @ mac dot com

Re: Overprint Not Converted to PDF Correctly
Peter, Right now I'm using Acrobat Standard. For preflighting, do you think upgrading to Acrobat Professional would be the way to go vs. buying a separate preflight program such as Flightcheck?

Re: Overprint Not Converted to PDF Correctly
I would either upgrade to Professional or purchase separate applications
such as Enfocus Pitstop (www.enfocus.com) or PDF Inspektor
(www.callas.de) as an example ....
