Default P4P800 onboard sound - silence.........

Ok, searched the web, ended up at alsa-project.org
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
downloaded: alsa-driver-0.9.6 and lib and util followed the
instructions on the AD1985
link. lsmod =

snd-intel8x0 22308 0 (unused)
snd-mpu401-uart 5200 0 [snd-intel8x0]
snd-rawmidi 18624 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-ac97-codec 49016 0 [snd-intel8x0]
snd-seq-oss 34560 0 (unused)
snd-seq-midi-event 6048 0 [snd-seq-oss]
snd-seq 47472 2 [snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event]
snd-pcm-oss 45284 0 (unused)
snd-mixer-oss 16408 0 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-seq-device 6236 0 [snd-rawmidi snd-seq-oss snd-seq]
snd-pcm 83296 0 [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss]
snd-timer 19748 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm]
snd 42692 0 [snd-intel8x0 snd-mpu401-uart
snd-rawmidi snd-ac97-codec
snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq
snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss
snd-seq-device snd-pcm snd-timer]
snd-page-alloc 9972 0 [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm]

Soundcard detection gives: Intel, 82801EB AC'97, mod - snd-intel8x0

Silence, total silence. I even checked my wiring. I'll keep trying but
I sure could
use some help.

The sound should be coming out of the "microphone in" connector,
at least that was the case with the Asus P4PE with similar onboard
sound.
