Page and line numbers as references - Adobe Indesign Windows

I have a specially structured doent: the right pages are containing the main text, and the left (facing) pages the author's notes. The text is in one column, the notes are in a two-columns frame, and the doent is divided into sections. Now, I have to place a lot of references into the author's text, which point to the main text, for example: (page 4 : line 25). The best would be an automatic reference procedure... How would you do it? Another problem: when I try to insert "Next page number" or "Previous page number" into the author's text, it ...

Next and previous page numbers only refer to threaded text frames. For
the next command to work you need to link the frame it's in to a frame
on the page that you want to reference.

OK, sounds simple, and I tried it: made a frame on the next page, linked it to the corresponding frame, but still nothing... I tried also on the master pages, did not work. I'm doing something wrong, but what?

The frame that has the page number symbol has to touch the frame of the text that is jumping to the next page. If the page number frame is not touching, it only shows the number of the current page.
