page numbering not showing up

Hi,

I have a document I would like to have page numbers on but only a red plus sign is displayed there. I've tried clicking on it to expand it but this doesn't work.

Would someone have an idea about this?

The text box where the numbering placeholder is in is to small for the
applied font settings, so change either the font settings or the size of the
box.

Presumably the frame in question is on the master page. The frame must be large enough to accommodate four digits even on pages where fewer are needed.
