Page tiling defaults when printing
I am using Windows XP, Illustrator 9.0
I have a document that is too large to print on an 8.5 x 11 sheet.
I set the size of my document to print at a percentage in the page setup and adjust the page tiling accordingly to fit the entire document on the 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. When I go to print the page it defaults back to the original page dimension, and does not print my entire document, but just a section.
The application has been reinstalled, but the problem remains.
I currently print to an Edox CLC900 printer and an HP 3500 DesignJet large format printer. I have the problem printing to both.
This problem didn't occur when I was using Windows 98!

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Andy,
You are talking about two types of printing. To use the PRINT\FIT TO PAGE option, the layout must fit the image to be printed. In other words, instead of an 8½"x11" layout, use a 17"x22" layout with the image inside, then PRINT, FIT TO PAGE. But, obviously you'll also get a smaller print image unless the image is already double the size for 8½"x11".
The best way is to have your layout the same as your print media in size (8½"x11" in this case). And CONTROL A to Select All, then either use Transform to Scale or manually scale it to fit the print size layout. Prior to doing this, of course, be sure to save as you'd like the final size of the image to be, even if not in a custom layout. But when you use the Page Tile tool, that sets the perameters for what will be printed to the size paper media you've set in the printer options.

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
The problem I have with page tiling is not limited to printing large documents on 8.5 x 11. If I have an 8.5 x 11 inch document and need to print it at 200%, I create a custom page size first to accomodate the larger size. I adjust the page tiling to "include" the entire area of the poster. As soon as I go "file...print", I can see the page tiling default back to 8.5 x 11. No matter what size document I'm printing from, it defaults back to 8.5 x 11 media size.
This wasn't a problem when we first installed the application on our new Windows XP computers or when we used Windows 98.
I have actually tried what you suggested and it didn't work. I'll try it again, though. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Andy,
You can't create a Page Tile larger than what your printer will print, regarless of how you set it up on the layout. And unless you resize as indicated in my first note, your printer will ONLY print that area within the print margin which apparently is 8½" x 11". The print area is SET by your printer's Driver and can't be changed by Illustrator except for where it picks up the objects to print (same size, of course).

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Bob,
I don't think you're quite understanding what I'm saying. I have a large format printer. I can print 4 feet wide and up to 100 feet long. Obviously my printer is able to print larger than 8.5 x 11 inches.
The other printer I print to has 11 x 17 inch paper as one of the media choices. I've been successfully printing to these printers (from Illustrator) for years...without any problems.
I appreciate your help, but I think I'll investigate other options.
Thanks for your prompt response!

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Andy,
If you DO have the large format printers, and are NOT getting the proper Page Tile, then you need to update the printer Drivers on those that aren't showing the proper print areas. YOU can not do it. It HAS to come from the printer driver.

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Bob,
Just out of curiosity, are you an Adobe technical support person, or just an Adobe Illustrator user like myself? I suppose this isn't always the best forum for solving problems. What I'm experiencing is best demonstrated when accompanied with a visual. Thanks for your time and suggestions!

Andy,
This is a User to User forum. Perhaps it's a communications problem.

Re: Page tiling defaults when printing
Bob,
I believe you may be right about a problem with communication. The written word is sometimes a poor substitute when explaining something best shown visually.
I do appreciate your suggestions and will use the information when attempting to resolve this. Once again...many thanks.
