Pagemaker under Classic - Mac Applications & Software

I've just gotten a new Mac that only runs Mac OS X. I used to run Pagemaker 6.52 on my old Mac in OS 9.2, and everything was fine. Pagemaker runs fine in Classic on my new Mac, except for how it displays fonts on screen. In PM under Classic, fonts display in very blocky, ugly, and difficult to read manner in the smaller point sizes (12pt for example). Default Pagemaker under Classic

I've just gotten a new Mac that only runs Mac OS X. I used to run Pagemaker
6.52 on my old Mac in OS 9.2, and everything was fine. Pagemaker runs fine
in Classic on my new Mac, except for how it displays fonts on screen.

In PM under Classic, fonts display in very blocky, ugly, and difficult to
read manner in the smaller point sizes (12pt for example).

Is there any way to improve how Pagemaker displays text when running under
Classic on OS X 10.2.x? When I ran OS 9, ATM made a great improvement in
on-screen fonts, but it doesn't seem to work under Classic.

I'm used to Pagemaker, and would rather not go to the trouble and expense
of switching to InDesign if I can avoid it.

I've never used MacOS X, but in MacOS 9 there's the Appearance Control
Panel that has a Smooth option in the Fonts section. It may or may not
help, but is worth a try.

There's also a Shareware Control Panel called SmoothType which may be
another fairly cheap possibility worth trying, you can download it for
    free from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/4070 to try
and it costs US$10 to register.

how did you get Pagemaker installed on you new mac? I tried the CD
installer and it seems to only work in OS9 so I haven't been able to
install on newer mac that won't run OS9.

    thanks

That didn't help. It seems that lack of ATM support under Classic is the
problem. ATM renders PS fonts on the screen under OS 9, but it looks like
this is an internal function of OS X when running Classic and it doesn't do
a very good job of rendering the fonts. I'll try the TrueType versions of
the fonts and see if that makes any difference (although I doubt it will).

I just put the CD in the drive and clicked on the PM installer. OS X
started up Classic, and the install went just like it does under OS 9.

What version of OS X are you running?

running 10.2.6. surprising that it worked for you so easily since
installer won't work in classic for me.
