[Panther] Mail.app cannot connect to Postfix (localhost:25) - Mac Networking

Hi, I've got a weird problem with the latest Panther Mail.app: it cannot connect to Postfix running on localhost port 25. Other MUAs like mutt can use it. andrehvk:~$ telnet localhost 25 Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 hvk.dyndns.org ESMTP Postfix I have no idea why Mail.app cannot use it. The only thing I could guess would be a firewall setting? I have blocked all UDP ports plus TCP ports above 1023. -Andre...

Default [Panther] Mail.app cannot connect to Postfix (localhost:25)

    Hi,

I've got a weird problem with the latest Panther Mail.app: it cannot
connect to Postfix running on localhost port 25. Other MUAs like mutt
    can use it.

    andrehvk:~$ telnet localhost 25
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.

I have no idea why Mail.app cannot use it. The only thing I could
guess would be a firewall setting? I have blocked all UDP ports plus

What's the error? Did you specify it as 'localhost' or as
'127.0.0.1'? You may have better luck with the latter, as you can see
from the telnet example you posted earlier. If you use 'localhost' it
will try the ipv6 localhost address first (::1), which will fail. Or
try disabling ipv6 altogether if you don't need it.

Unless you went out of your way to block traffic on the loopback
interface (lo0), which wouuld be a bit silly imo, the ipfw settings
    aren't relevant.

It's the same with both "localhost" and "127.0.0.1", I forgot to
mention that. Even after a reboot <cough>.

Could you please tell me what your "127.0.0.1" and "::1" lines in
/etc/hosts look like, just to check mine are OK?

While I don't really need IPv6 right now, I would like to keep it if
possible. Well, how would I disable it if necessary?

No, there are no rules for lo0 in my setup.

But it seems Mail.app's SMTP depends on the computer's online status?
B/c when I am online, "!27.0.0.1" is found and the mail delivered.
