Panther man pages strangeness - Mac Programming

On my 10.2.6 system I can do a "man malloc" and get the malloc(3) doentation with no problem. On my 10.3.4 system, though, I get "no manual entry for malloc". Ditto for calloc, valloc and free. However, when I do "man malloc_size" I get the page for malloc. Does anyone else have this problem, and more particularly, does anyone know how to fix it? I've rebuilt the "whatis" database, but that didn't help. Thanks! Dave...

I suspect that these depend upon your installation. Make sure you
installed the BSD tools, and if that's not enough, make sure you
installed the BSD developer stuff from Xcode. m.

You didn't install the BSD subsystem, which contains those man pages.

I had that problem when I did an upgrade install to Panther. A bunch
of man pages were missing, despite having done a full install of the
    developer tools, BSD subsytem, etc.

I never found a way to resolve it and ended up reformatting and
reinstalling. I'm sure that was excessive.
