Default Pantone colours in PS and ID

Silly question but why are the Pantone colours reproduced in ID swatches so way off from the Photoshop ones?

The only way I find I can approximate them is to create a duotone in PS and then import the eps into ID.

Are you simply concerned about how the Pantone colors look on screen, or
will they end up in print?

If it is on screen you are trying to achieve, I would suggest you stick with
RGB in both Photoshop and InDesign.

For print, it really doesn't make any difference (except for proofing) how a
colorant displays on screen. The mixed ink will be applied at the press, and
it should match the printed swatch book.

First of all, make sure that your color managment is set up identically
    in both programs.

Also, you're not being real clear as to whether you're using actual spot
colors in Photoshop or just using them as CMYK or RGB references. In
order to get an exact match you need to use spot channels or duotones.

I'm working on a job right now that's two colors using a duotone PSD and
mixed inks in ID. The match is dead on even zoomed to 4000%.

Take a look here: Dave Saunders "Indesign and Photoshop Librarys Don't Match" 4/29/04 11:48am </cgi-bin/webx?13@@.3bb3dbba/3>

The issue is the same on Mac and Windows.

Can you tell me what settings you get to get such accuracy between ID and PS? Or is this a house secret?

    No secret. US Prepress defaults.

But like I said, you must be using actual Pantone colors, not
    Photoshop's interpretation of them.

What do you recommend for UK prepress? Mine is KODAK SWOP PROOFER CMYK COATED (and this is the same settings across all CS apps)

    Thanks!

Never did anything in the UK so I couldn't say. But if all apps are the
same and you're using true spots in PS and using those colors which
should have been added to your color palette in ID when you placed them,
    they should match exactly.
