Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
Out of interest - can you print the file from Acrobat 4 (smile)?
Only I have seen this behaviour before and could only put the problem
down to a broken font embedded with legacy software ...
It would be interesting to see what occurs if you open the PDF and then
PRINT to the ADOBE PDF PRINT with a setting such as PRESS ....

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
Hi Jon,
When I see the publisher is saving the file as PDF version 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x) I don't know if the publisher is using old software or whether it is a conscious decision to dumb it down for the widest possible audience.
I don't have Acrobat 4, so can't test your suggestion.
When I go File > Print and choose Abobe PDF 7.0 as the printer, it produces a PDF that has the letter "u" missing on screen in the particular font. Just like the prints I described from the various hard copy printers.

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
Are you in a position to ask the publisher to either try different
settings with Distiller server on Solaris - or indeed, try a different
application/Distiller setting to prove a point.
Seriously - this is almost 10 years old (the technology that is) and
certain things update well - others do not ...

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
No, I'm not in a position to ask. This is a major scientific journal in its field that goes to 5,000 members in 23 countries (that's why I thought maybe they dumbed it down on purpose). It is published by Allen Press in Kansas (www.allenpress.com). I'd be surprised if their software is 10 years out of date.
As an aside, I receive lots of PDFs from scientific journals, and many times the pages containing color photographs won't print unless I print as image. Usually the PDF producer application is some publishing system I've never heard of, and frequently a SPARC-based system. But this is the first instance where a particular letter drops out.
Thanks for your comments.

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
It shouldn't drop out. You can download Reader 5 and print to see what happens. I suspect it may be a case of font not embedded/Acrobat 7 bug.

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
Mark,
You mention Acrobat 7 bug. Does one exist that you know of that would produce this type of type problems?
I've had several instances lately using Acrobat Pro 7 where letters drop out. All fonts are embedded. I've even had a 11 turn into a 1. One of the ones drops out, same font, size everything.

Re: Particular letter drops out when printing PDF
Hi Murray,
How do you print the PDF's?
Have you preflighted the file?
May I have such a PDF where even in AC7 letters drop out?
