    Default paste in place

is there anyway to paste an object from one file to the next or even within the same file in the same place. something similar to the paste in place function in InDesign ctrl-alt-sft-v? or does one have to always create some sort of guide object or type in the position in the transfrom box?

    Rp,

Paste in front (Ctrl+F) or paste in back (Ctrl+B) will give you original position.

Then all you have to do is select an object and then click on the layer
to reposition it on that layer. If the selected object is actually a
sub-selected part of a group it will not work, you can only move whole
    groups.

FreeHand has 'Paste in Front' and 'Paste Behind'. You must have another item
    selected for these to work.

If you check Preferences > Panels >'Clicking on layer name moves selected
objects', then you can send objects to layers easily.
