Re: Paste question
The default for Paste is to center in the document.
If you choose Edit > Paste in Place, it will paste in the same x,y position.
How is the application supposed to read your mind about where you wanted it pasted?

And if that's how you want it all the time, do what I did...change the
keyboard shortcuts.

Re: Paste question
Use a two step process: Paste, then move. Use the control pallet to move precisely.

Re: Paste question
Thanks for that Robert & Alferrari - Steve - in some applications you can click the cursor and then your copied object will place itself where you want it to go - or was that humour I couldn't tell?!!!!

Would you mind telling us again, how exactly the software reads your mind?

....presumably by you clicking the cursor somewhere in the layout.
I'd like to know what application does that?

Re: Paste question
So the OP thinks it is easier to do [ click - cmd v ] than to [ cmd v - drag ] ?
I wonder why.

Re: Paste question
A method of duplicating in place: select the object, press option-down arrow, then press the up arrow.
For pasting in place (the same place on a different page) I press command-option-v. I can't remember if this is my shortcut or if it is built in. Either way, it's simple to remember and use.

No Gerald,
What the OP wants is [ cmd v - click ] so that the paste takes place where he clicks, and not until he does so.
That would be an improvement. It would be clicking with a "loaded cursor."

Re: Paste question
Art_ik, if you are duplicating items on the same page or spread, then you can use the OPTION key to drag a dupliate and position the obect where you desire (add SHIFT to constrain the movement to 45 degree angles).
• Select the object
• Hold the OPTION Key and note that the cursor changes to a double (black over white) arrow.
• Click and drag the duplicate to the desired location on the page or spread.

DavidT - This is not the default. It is one you (and I) have changed.

Re: Paste question
Fair enough, thanks Chris. It's hard to remember which are default and which are not - and it's a pain in the backside when you try to use someone else's ID. If I did that regularly, I suppose I'd make sure they had a copy of my shortcuts.
Is/was there a default for paste-in-place?

Re: Paste question

I believe it's listed earlier in this thread.
I think it's: command+option+SHIFT+v
I switched mine to the same one PM used. (command+option+v) (without the shift key involved).

Re: Paste question
By default, Paste Into is Command-Shift-V; Paste in Place is Command-Shift-Option-V.
Given the relatively frequency with which I use these two commands (and also because of my PageMaker background), I always reverse these two shortcuts.
