Paste Special

Indesign CS really needs "Paste Special" same as Pagemaker (and just about everything else).
I want to be able to choose to paste formatted text or plain text "on the fly".
The ID CS preference "Preseve Text Attributes When Pasting" is an improvement over ID2 but doesn't go far enough.

Paste Special is a dead technology, based on Object Linking and Embedding. InDesign abandons this OLE altogether. It never worked properly in PageMaker.

Yes the ID CS preference is useful. Also, in the Place dialog box, if you switch on the Show Options dialog box, you get the ability to import the text with or without the formatting.

In this case, I disagree. A paste special that would allow text to be
stipped of its formatting would be great.

While a completely different type of program, I use Paste Special all
the time in Corel Draw when I need to get something from Powerpoint into
InDesign. Sometimes one choice is a bit better than the other. But in no
case is OLE used at all.

You've got the gist of what I'm saying.
Since we're only talking about stripping formatting from text, I can't see Mike's point about OLE.

I suspect the majority of ID-CS users still want this feature.
But here's my theory on the deafening silence:
We all complained about the lack of text pasting options in ID2, then CS gave us the "Preserve Text Attributes When Pasting" option. Now, we're hesitant to complain again when we're meant to be 'grateful'.

Anyway, it's just a theory.

Oh, I see now. What would be great is another Paste command on the menu, something like Paste Plain Text, with a snazzy shortcut like Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Num-Ins-Pageup-V.

Or something like that.

Okay, so did any of you see the Ripley's episode of the guy with six fingers on each hand? He worked for years on a ship and apparently his shipmates never noticed. He obviously didn't "point" it out, but on the program even when he held up his hand and splayed his fingers it didn't look unusual until you counted the fingers. Ripley's commissioned a pair of leather gloves for him; the first pair he's had in his life.

I'm wondering if there is a way to link or embed a picture with the text in my document so that when the text moves the picture moves, too.

Put the picture in an in-line frame.
