Because Effects are non-selectable appearances. The only way to select them
is to first Expand Appearances which converts your "effect" to a real "object."

So you can apply the effect and still edit the original and in case you at some later date decide you want to use the object or text without the effect you just remove the effect and you are good to go and can now update it and if you wish apply a different effect. That is after you have saved and closed the document and then two months later you have to revise it. Not only that but you can apply more than one effect to an object or text and not have to duplicate it and paste in the back or front and apply another filter etc. I think you get the idea. So there is a reason why there is still th Object > Path and the Effect>Path similar but different

I would say it does either not work or it is used for something? But what as it can't be selected as you say? Perhaps when Teri petit gets back form her trip she can explain it. It would be nice if it worked the same way but you kept the original intact?
