    Default Pathfinder tools

I cannot get the pathfinder tools to work -- what am I doing wrong.

I have a graphic and text converted to outlines. I have the text placed over the graphis and am trying to use the exclude function. I select both the text and the graphic and click on exclude -- but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

I don't think you can use exclude wit placed images.

I'm not using a placed image. It is a vector image with text outlines -- shouldn't that work?

If you are in Illustrator 10 or Illustrator CS, you need to click the expand button after clicking exclude. Or hold down the option key as you click on exclude. If you are in Illustrator 8, there is no need to do this, than I don't know why your pathfinder doesn't work.
