In addition to the drive my B/W G3 came with, I have 3 drives from PC's
installed in it. 2 in the extra hard drive slots and one where the Zip
drive was supposed to go. It pays to have friends with PC's that find
they have to scrap them after a couple of years. Not sure about the
Sony DVD but my guess would be yes.

    In a G4 yes, in a G5 maybe. In my G4 (dual 1.25) I've installed 4 x
120GB IDE hard drives, the same ones you use in a Windows computer, plus
the stock DVDR and a Lite-On 52X CDRW.

WRT specific CDRW/DVDR drive brands and Mac compatibility, some are
supported and some aren't. There's an excellent resource at the
    following url:

    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso

which you can use to find out if your DVDR will work or if there might
be hacked drivers will will let you use it with a Mac. I bought my
Lite-On CDRW based on reports in this database that it was fully
    supported by the OS.

The G5 uses serial ATA so you would need adapters or an ATA PCI card to
use 40 pin/80 wire type ATA/IDE hard drives.
