PDF file opened in Photoshop
Hello.
I'm not sure if anyone has an answer to this or not but here goes...
I received a PDF file from someone that is doing something really strange. If I open the file in Photoshop and rasterize it in RGB it comes out fine. If I open the file in Photoshop and rasterize it in CMYK there is a line of text in a logo that disapears.
I have no idea what platform/software was used to put the PDF together but it will do this same thing opened in Photoshop 7 through CS on a Mac.
Does anyone know what might be causing this line of text to disapear when opened as CMYK but nothing else?
Thanks!

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
It's hard to think of the cause, but you are of course using a very
old Photoshop. Maybe the file is a newer version of PDF than Photoshop
7 supports.
If you could share the file (e.g. on your web or FTP site) it may
allow interested people to try it out.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
I think you misunderstood. I said that the file was opened using Photoshop 7 THROUGH Photoshop CS. Same result in all.

None the less Aandi is suggesting that without more data he cannot
think of a reason. Hence the request to see the file.
How is the logo composed? What file type is it? How is the pdf file
created? Using what version of Acrobat and what application program?

I don't see a way to attach the file to these messages. Am I missing something?
As I said before I have no idea how/what/when/where the PDF file was created.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
Well you can get the "when" by going to File > Document Properties... You might even notice the "how" in there. Look in the "Application:" or "PDF Producer:" field

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
In my experience the information in that area is useless. It's pretty much always blank (as it is in this case as well).

That's the case, and why I said "If you could share the file (e.g. on
your web or FTP site) "...

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
Document information says that is was exported from IDCS2 as a PDF 1.4.
I don't get those symptoms when I rasterize as CMYK. It's the same between CMYK and RGB.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
The difference is very slight.
Send me your CMYK result and let me take a look.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
Actually, I take that back. JVL Associates is dropping out. I guess my eyes aren't working as good as usual today.
Those aren't fonts, they're outlines.
Any idea how the logo is being produced and placed into InDesign?

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
As I said, I have no idea how/who/where/when this file was created.
What is telling you that particular line is outline and not actual text?
If I remember correctly it's the line that says "JVL Associates" that disapears when rasterized as CMYK.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
Two things.
For one, it isn't selectable with the text tool in Acrobat. Also, when opened in illustrator, it shows as an outline.
I have no idea why it is dropping out.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
Carol, I would say that Photoshop is honoring the JVL white type that is set to overprint (check this in preview in acrobat) when rasterizing to CMYK colour space and disregarding the overprint when switching to other colour space RGB. I would say the logo is adobe illustrator I've seen this may times when rasterising files.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
I've also downloaded the PDF file and reviewed it and yes, the JVL white text is set to overprint. We've dealt with this issue a number of times in our facility, but don't recall if we've come up with a workaround to be able to correct the file without having the original creator fix and resubmit.

Re: PDF file opened in Photoshop
We get these often enough in prepress where I toil. The only (most convenient?) way to zap them back to knockout is with PitStop Pro. But then it's a relatively pricey prepress toolbox. Having said that, it's paid for itself many times over.
Acrobat Pro 7 can diagnose the problem, (dud overprints from Illy), but PitStop pro is the fix vehicle.
