PDF file size too large...
All,
I work in an agency where for the past 10 years we have used Pagemaker for all of our literature. We have created PDF's from PM for use on our web site. The process was flawless and file size of the PDF's were very small.
We have now upgraded to InDesign 2.0. Although I can "Open" the Pagemaker files in ID there are some slight changes in formatting, etc. I digress, when I save and then export the PDF's from ID, the file sizes are 3 to 4 times larger then their previous Pagemaker PDF's. Our divisions are not happy with the download time for the web application and I was hoping for some insight as to why and what ID is doing to make "the same file" that much larger.
Just a FYI, I'm not a novice and have been using the "screen" export setting as well as customizing the resolutions for the images, etc. I have removed bookmarks, etc. in trying to rid the PDF of any residule information.
I have also opened the PDF and used the "reduce file size" although it helps a little, the files are not even close to the Pagemaker PDF's that where previously created.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm assuming it's a ID issue and was wondering if anyone had run into the same problem.
Thanks
E

Re: PDF file size too large...
Here is a tip that may help. If you use the acrobat Adobe PDF print driver Click on the button named (within the print command box) copies & pages and do to a feature called Printer Features and set the dpi setting from 1200 dpi to 72 dpi.
It will look as good on the web as it does on screen. This will in somes cases reduce the file size by a Factor of 10.
I've got a question in asking how to permanently set this to this number. Its such an esoteric setting that I forget lots of times and go from a 65kb file to a 650kb file at the tip of a hat. This should be a setting within acrobat and it should stick until the next time you want to change it. But I can't find a setting for it in Acrobat, Distiller, or even the Adobe PDF print Driver.

Re: PDF file size too large...
I appreciate the reply!
I tried your procedure and the file was actually larger than by using the "export" command , which is the way I usually create my PDF's. I appreciate the help! Have played with the compression quality and have downsized a little more but still not to where it has been in the past.
I am at a loss why Adobe changes a good thing. My PageMaker PDF's where simple and straight forward .... click, click and out the door you go!
I love change but this grief is wearing me down...
