pdf from InDesign printing problems

When I create a pdf from InDesign and print it to a color copier, it prints text box backgrounds that are supposed to be transparent. The file looks fine on the screen, but the printed document is full of layered backgrounds that should not be there. Isn't a pdf file supposed to wrap everthing into one nice, little package and print WYSIWYG?

What software are you using to print it? Reader? Acrobat? What version?

I've tried three different printers: OfficeMax, Kinkos and Minuteman. OfficeMax used Acrobat 6.0, Kinkos and Minuteman used 5.0. They all had variations of the same problem.

These printers are unlikely to print transparency - if indeed this is
the problem.

You need to pre-flight the PDF file.

Your best strategy is to ensure transparency is NOT in the PDF ....
1. Export/PDF - Select PDF 1.3 as the version to enable flattening to occur
2. Print to Adobe PDF through the PRINT menu - ADVANCED/Transparency
Flattener/High Resolution
