PDF preset cross platform issue

My printer wants me to use a specific pdf preset for creating an x-1a press ready pdf. He's emailed me a "pdfs" file with the exact settings. Problem is, he's on mac, I'm on a PC - and my IDCS does not want to read it (from the "Load PDF preset dialogue box in the file menu) even though Windows recognises the file and gives it the appropriate icon. Any ideas?

Just use the settings already in ID.

I would use the ID preset but my prepress people say that the list of "Output Intent Profiles" (in the advanced tab of the print dialogue box) does not contain the profile they use and therefore want me to use their version.

The olde worlde workaround we've used has been to get him to read his print dialogue box options over the phone to me so that I create the profile native to my machine. Not ideal but it works (obviously).

I'd still be interested to know if ID presets are cross platform compatible though.
