Default PDF views in acrobat as single pages, imports as spreads

I have received a 6 page A4 pdf document which was produced in QuarkXpress using Acrobat Distiller 6 (version 1.5 pdf) and is being viewed in Acrobat 7.0.9. When I view it in Acrobat it appears as single pages without crops, trims etc; when I import into InDesign CS2 it automatically places as 3pp spreads, including crop marks and trims, and in the right order.

    How do you do that?!!

WHY? I would have thought its an Acrobat feature (as when viewing the pdf in Acrobat, it has no trims, crops etc; but if I look at the preview in the Crop Pages dialogue, the full spread and bounding boxes are visible) rather than InDesign specific.

But if you know something I don't, how about pointing me in the direction of a particular thread???

Because you're placing the PDF in InDesign. The layout options are all there, not in Acrobat. You can view 2-up in Acrobat, but that's about it.

OK, I get your thinking BUT I have pretty much exhausted all the usual import option dialogue boxes, properties boxes etc and looked at all the drop downs I can.

Maybe I could send you the pdf? I don't think you'll be quite with my dilemma till you've seen it!

PDFs by default display the crop box - it seems as though InDesign as
importing the PDF based on the trim, art, media, bounding or bleed box ...

InDesign / File / Place / (click import options) / now you can decide
which box you wish to use upon import ...

    Jon:

I've tried that method, it only imports as spreads - whether they have trims, bleed, whatever option doesn't isolate the page.

Perhaps what is more interesting in this is where the pdf views in Acrobat, the page count is 6. When importing all pages at once in InDesign, the page count is also 6, but the application just sequentially imports two spreads of 3, three times over.

    Mark:

I have nowhere to post the pdf to I'm afraid.

What if you go Tools/Advanced Editing/Crop/

    Set crop to ZERO

Does this now display any different in Acrobat??

    Jon,

Nice one! That's the nail hit square on the head. I had played with the crop tool before and I think I was put off it because I rarely am able to get the pre-requisite Crop/Trim/Bleed/Art crop options to actually crop the document... it seems its not the most reliable tool but it has certainly done the trick here!

    Thanks very much.
