pdf will open in a folder but not through IE Browser

I have a pdf burned on a CD. It has a link in an html page. When the link is pressed I receive an acrobat.exe error message.

If I explore the CD and open the file directly, it opens fine.

The file was optimized for Acrobat 4.0 or higher and created in Acrobat 6

Can anyone give me information to get me started troubleshooting the file?

Another interesting observation. I ran this CD on another machine. The pdf in question did not open in IE, but there was no error message.

Also if I open the file directly from the source, it does open.

There are numerous other pdf files on the CD that work just fine.

What OS?

If it's 2000 or Xp, right click on the My Computer icon and choose Manage.

From the Management console, go to System Tools, and click the expander next to Event Viewer.

Select the Application entry, and go to the approximate time of the error. Double click the entry and see what it says. It should either be an IE error or an Acrobat error. The information the event viewer may help determine what is really going on.

There is a button in the event viewer dialog that allows you to send entries to the clipboard so you can post the info back to the group.

Another observation. On the second Win2000 machine, the one without the error, a IE window open, the staus bar says done and there is a white beveled box in IE without any information.

Again if I open the file outside of IE everything is ok.

"Exception code c0000005 means "access violation". Check if LocalSystem account ("System") has full access to the root directory where the operating system is stored."

As this appears to happening within the web browser, make sure that the permissions and security settings are such that viewer can be activated properly.

Are you using the same version of the plug-in on both machines?

I think if I can fix this one machine, then I will have a solution to both.

If I open the file directly from the folder, I get a message That this file may container newer information than this viewer can support. ....

I have opened this file in Acrobat 6 and saved it to be accessible by Acrobat 4 or higher. Maybe this method will not give me the effect that I want.

I am running viewer 5.0.9 and the document was saved in Acrobat 6.0.1
