Default PDF with fill-in fields saved in Standard 6 - open in any version of Reader?

This is a format backwards compatibility question. If I save IRS forms with filled-in fields from Standard version 6.0, will someone be able to open the document in any previous version of Acrobat Reader? If not, how many versions backward does compatibility extend?

All of the latest fillable IRS forms I've seen are PDF 1.3, which means Reader 4 and up should have no problems. Reader 3.0x users will probably be OK as well. This assumes that you don't add anything other than form field contents and do not apply 128-bit security.

But if you save a completed Form with Acrobat 6 then the form will change to PDF1.5 - Acrobat 6 compatible.

In practical terms this will probably not mean all that much apart from a user with a previous version of Acrobat getting a warning mssgae when openining the file to say that not all features in the document may be available.

Once you have completed your form you could use File > Reduce File Size which could produce a PDF 1.3, in other words compatible with Acrobat 4 and above. People using anything earlier than this should be shot on sight.

According to Adobe's website only Professional allows you to create
    backward-compatiable PDFs. See (
