PDFs from AppleWorks 6
We have a customer who has furnished pdf files created by saving from AppleWorks 6.
Unfortunately, none of the colors are separating correctly. Some of the "black" type is separating to cmy only (with zero percent blk), while some of it is 100 percent black. The spot red is separating to cmyk. Some of the graphics are greyscale while some are rgb. They don't have a clue as to what settings they are using to save the pdf, nor where to even look for them in AppleWorks. Neither do I, as we've never received files from AppleWorks before. They don't have Acrobat or Distiller (that they know of!), so I'm at a loss.
Any help would be appreciated.
We're on OS 9.2.2., Acrobat 5, Distiller 5.
We have AppleWorks 6, but please don't suggest asking for their native files, as we don't even want to go there!
Thanks.

Re: PDFs from AppleWorks 6
What you've described is a pretty hopeless situation: Your customer is using an application which totally inappropriate for doing color separations. You don't want to work in the application yourself to change the output. You're still using an out-of-date operating system and a version of Acrobat that's two versions old. And apparently you don't own any tools for working with colors in a PDF like Pitstop Professional.
Tell your customer that what they're using is inappropriate, recreate the file for your customer in an appropriate application, and charge them for your time.
And it's time for you to move into the 21st century, and get some updated applications, and prepare yourself better for working with PDF files, or you'll gradually continue to lose business.

You've assumed incorrectly, as we own both PitStop and Quite A Box of Tricks which we use extensively to edit and repair customer files. This job just has too much wrong with it and I was merely asking if there was something the customer could do differently with his AppleWorks files to make things better.
recreate the file for your customer in an appropriate application, and
charge them for your time.
The job is due in two days and: a.) we don't have time to recreate a 48-page magazine; and b.) they'll never pay for it. Apparently their previous printer had the time to fix things every month (which is probably why they charged more than our quote.) Needless to say, if we end up doing this job it will be re-quoted now that we know what we're dealing with.

James,
Good use of colour management and remapping with action lists within
Pitstop will make the job a real doddle ....
