Default PDFs readable to Acrobat 5?

Can the newer versions of Acrobat create a PDF that is readable to Acrobat 5? I get a number of PDFs that my (Acrobat 5) cannot read correctly. Can I tell the agencies sending me these PDFs to make them readable to Acrobat 5? I cannot upgrade from 5 at this time as it is the newest version my Mac will run. Thanks for any ideas. - Dennis

In Acrobat 6 or 7, go to File > Reduce File Size..., or, if you have the Pro version you can use the Optimizer in the Advanced menu.

Or if you setup Distiller to use Acrobat 5/1.4 compatibility as one of its settings files and have Distiller use that file; Acrobat will create them Acrobat 5 format "as long as" you do "Save As"; and "not" "Save".

If you use "Save" it saves in native format regardless of how Distiller is set.

Have you tried Acrobat 4? We've had some PDFs that view poorly in
Acrobat 5 and print OK. They view OK in Acrobat 4, 6, and 7, just not
    in 5...
