Can anyone give me a quick user-freidnly expo of what PDFX is (and should I use those setting when PDFing Indesign publications fo the web?)

The most user friendly thing I remember is the PDF/X FAQ <http://www.pdfx.info/faq.html> (frequently Asked Questions), By Martin Bailey.

Short and sweet, PDF X/1-a is considered a fail-safe press ready file.
No transparency and only CMYK graphics.
Of course, that's VERY short and sweet and to answer your question,
there's no need to use it for web based PDFs.

Short and sweet - if preparing a PDF file for a printer - they might prefer PDF/x which enforces a set of standards such as all CMYK, resolution of images, no subsetted fonts, etc... Best is to ask the printer what they would prefer you to use for PDF output settings. (And then why the want those settings - you might learn something about printing)
