Perle/Specialix SX PCI cable on SCO OS 5.0.7 - SCO

Hi. I'm sorry if this is a silly question but this one is driving me crazy. First of all, I'm not a great HW expert so bear with me again :-( I'm using a Perle/Specialix SX PCI board on a SCO OS 5.0.7 box as to setup an incoming PPP/modem connection; I'm also using an external TA8 box. Given the docs from Perle, I could use one of the following cable specs: DB25 to DB25 modem cable configuration ###################################### TA8 --------- MODEM RXD 2 ----- 3 RXD TXD 3 ----- 2 TXD RTS 4 ----- 5 CTS CTS 5 ----- ...

    Default Perle/Specialix SX PCI cable on SCO OS 5.0.7

    Hi.

    I'm sorry if this is a silly question but this one is driving me crazy.

    First of all, I'm not a great HW expert so bear with me again :-(

    I'm using a Perle/Specialix SX PCI board on a SCO OS 5.0.7 box as to
    setup an incoming PPP/modem connection; I'm also using an external TA8 box.

    Given the docs from Perle, I could use one of the following cable specs:

    DB25 to DB25 modem cable configuration
    ######################################

    TA8 --------- MODEM

    RXD 2 ----- 3 RXD
    TXD 3 ----- 2 TXD
    RTS 4 ----- 5 CTS
    CTS 5 ----- 4 RTS
    DSR 6 ----- 20 DTR
    GND 7 ----- 7 GND
    DCD 8 ----- 8 DCD
    DTR 20 ---- 6 DSR

    DB25 to DB25 (DCE) null modem cable configuration
    #################################################
    TA8 --------- MODEM

    RXD 2 ----- 3 RXD
    TXD 3 ----- 2 TXD
    RTS 4 ----- 5 CTS
    CTS 5 ----- 4 RTS
    DSR 6 ----- 20 DTR
    DCD 8 -/
    DTR 20 ---- 6 DSR
    \- 8 DCD
    GND 7 ----- 7 GND

    I manually wired both of the above but, when the "atdialer" finishes its
    stuff, getty does __NOT__ block while opening /dev/ttyA2 (waiting for
    the DCD to come up) and accept an imcoming (but non existent) DATA
    connection.

    Here's the excerpt from /etc/inittab on the SCO OS 5.0.7 box which deals
    with getty on ttyA2:

    A2:234:respawn:/etc/getty -x9 -t60 ttyA2 o

    Here's the /usr/lib/uucp/Devices file:

    Direct tty1a - 19200 direct
    Direct ttya1 - 38400 direct
    Direct ttya2 - 38400 direct
    thunder ttyA2 - 38400 thunder \D
    #Direct ttyA1 - 38400 direct
    #Direct ttyA2 - 38400 direct

    Here's the contents of the /usr/lib/uucp/default/thunder file:

    #
    # Modem: ThunderCom 566 TV
    #
    #
    MDM_SETUP=AT &K3 E0 V1 &D2 &C1 W1 S0=2
    MDM_SPEAKER=ATL3
    MDM_DIALCMD=ATDT
    MDM_HANGUP=ATH

    And here's the /usr/adm/syslog file which outlines the problem:

    I've personally checked the modem and I'm sure DCD is low; I've also
    checked the same with a serial yzer and DCD is still low.

    At this point, I'm under the impression that I'm either using the wrong
    cabling scheme or something is wrong with the board: I think it's worth
    mentioning that a simple "cu -l /dev/ttya2" does work and that the very
    same configuration but using tty1a (COM1) works swimmingly well.

    I've also tried with another TA (4 ports) with similar results.

    Thanks,
    Roberto

    | thunder ttyA2 - 38400 thunder \D
    | #Direct ttyA1 - 38400 direct
    | #Direct ttyA2 - 38400 direct

    I've never had \D in the Devices file entries.

    | Here's the contents of the /usr/lib/uucp/default/thunder file:

    It won't change anything in your results, but move that file to
    /etc/default/thunder. It's easier for the atdialer to find it,
    expecially as /etc/default is searched before /usr/lib/uucp/default.
