Default Place and Transparency from Illustrator >>>>

Hi guys, I just place an Illustrator logo file which has transparency and multiply layer effects in into an InDesign artboard. I tried two options one with freeze effects (expand I guess) and the other without. Most of the logo and transparency effects prints fine, but a part of it just does not show at all. Is there any way of securing all the effects when placing? If nothing works I could just raster the file, but is not the best look I think, and I believe it might change the colors. Any help on how to secure printing Illustrator files with layer effects placed in InDesign?

Thanks a lot and best regards,
    Sebastiao

Open the file in Illustrator and select the white objects. Open the
attributes palette and see if it's set to overprint.

The only problems I am aware of related to this can occur if you then attempt to convert the spot color(s) to process in InDesign (or some other downstream app).

In fact, by default Illustrator puts up a warning dialog about this when you save a file with spots and transparency, but most of us long ago checked the "Don't show me this again" checkbox :-)

I remember that there are situations where transparency and spot objects can result in white areas that are set to overprint. I can't remember how to build them.
Can you remind me in which situations these white OP areas occur?

And why is this a problem that a competent printer can't solve?

    Thanks

The problem I was referring to has to do with a spot color in an InDesign object not matching the same spot color in an Illustrator file with transparency when the spot is converted to process in InDesign.

    As to this:

I remember that there are situations where transparency and spot objects
can result in white areas that are set to overprint.

I think you can reliably get it to happen by placing an object casting a black drop shadow over a spot-color object in InDesign, and then flattening. The shadow will be rendered as a grayscale image which is set to overprint, and the page will require a viewer and/or RIP that is set to honor overprint.

Sorry, did not read this one close enough. Thought the file was built with InDesign totally, missed the Illustrator part.

    Peter,

when the spot is converted to process in InDesign

Yes, it seems it can happen that the flattener uses two different alternate colours during the conversion process for the AI objects and for the ID objects when you use e.g. the "simulate overprint" option during print time.

    a black drop shadow over a spot-color

In that case you get a simple overprinting pixel-object. This is not what I meant and this should not be a problem. A printer who has his RIP set to ignore all overprint attributes is not worth his money and should stay with printing XPress files.

I distinctly remember a colleague showing me a case where a paper-coloured (!) object set to overprint was created in the flattening process and I remember that this was correct and expected behaviour in that case. I only do not remember the setup.
This would be a potentially serious problem for any printer. Any preflight-setting I have seen in Acrobat or PitStop gives alarm at 0-0-0-0 objects set to overprint.

Did I dream this? Or does anyone else know of that setup?

    Thank you

    Gerald,

I don't think I've seen that situation, though it is certain that the transparency flattener sometimes works in "mysterious ways..."
