    What version Illustrator?

Do the Illustrator objects extend beyound the artboard in Illustrator? What exactly is being left behind?

When placing check the show options and set the crop to: Bounding through Media.

Each crop to has its own purpose so you will want to familirize yourself with them in regards to placing .ai and pdf files.
