Default Placing bitmaps in Illustrator CS: scale/position relative to artboard

When placing a bitmap (in my case a .PNG) the image appears at a scale and at a position that is nowhere specified. I have the impression that the scale has some relation with 72 ppi but my images are 300 ppi.
I have scanned the documentation for an hour but could not find an explanation of this behaviour.
I am unable to scale the image or move its position so that it fits in the printable area.

Default Re: Placing bitmaps in Illustrator CS: scale/position relative to artboard

    Peter,

PNG is A web raster image, and as such is intended for screen use only. Thus when you convert a master image to PNG format, it'll be the same filesize but in 72ppi when you bring it into Illustrator AND that's why it's scaled so much larger than it was in PhotoShop. Same number of pixels translates into larger sized pixels at 72ppi than 300ppi. Make the format PSD or TIFF and Place it into Illustrator at 300ppi and it should stay the same scale as it is in PhotoShop. Even a JPEG will stay scaled because it'll come into Illustrator at the same ppi as it was saved as. To check this, Window\Document info\ and click the option arrow in the upper right and ask to see images (linked/no X or embedded/x'd), depending on how you Placed it). This will give you the facts on that image, including total pixels and ppi value of the image as Illustrator see it.
